So you’re like, feminist? Prove it.

Co-writer, Sound & Set Designer

Blue Room Theatre, Summer Nights 2023

In this chick flick brought to stage, Audrey learns what it takes to be a feminist when you don’t have all the facts, as she balances a terrifying personal and moral dilemma of cinematic proportions.

“Bubble-gum pop does theatre – I was instantly transported to my pre-Y2K bedroom… Bad Feminist is a hilariously sharp study in judgement.” – Laura Money, Fourth Wall Magazine

“The script was a testament to the intellect and creativity of the playwrights Abi Russell and Holland Brooks, who brought the dark to light with comedic flair and social, resonance” – Nanci Notts, Arts Hub

Working side by side with AV, as we transported the contents of the characters phones to a projected audio/visual experience for the audience.

I would create a sound scape using elements of sound design from the rest of the show, plus an array of vocal recordings, notification and static sounds, to create a score with which the AV designer was able to create an accompanying visual.

Content warning for trigering language around s*xual assault.

n this sound scape, protagonist Audrey spirals into her nightmare scenario of being percieved as a fake feminist for not addressing accusations made about her boyfriend, Benji.

Bad Feminist required us to take a topic as delicate as sexual assault culture and dissect it for an audience in a safe way that allows them to fully consider it in the fullest depth, a task I took on through comedic, delicate writing and a comforting, stylised approach to design.

Design for Bad Feminist was an exercise in genre and stylisation – music that evoked memories of Y2K pop icons, colours that make you feel like you’re inside a rom com and set design that transports you to the bedroom every girl wanted at 16.

Bad Feminist was an experiment in blending cinematic and theatre conventions, using rewinds, montages and play/pause screens for fourth wall breaks, to make it feel like a 2000s rom-com come to life.

Music Design - the Y2K Fantasy

With references like Hannah Montana, Demi Lovato, and One Direction, I wanted to produce a theme that felt like the audience was inside the opening credits to a Disney channel show, or Clueless, or maybe 10 Things I Hate About You

This was the Bad Feminist ‘theme’ that we played during preshow and lightly under the character introductions to get that chick-flick feeling.
